There are various types of industrial robots that are improving business productivity at high levels. These robots can be classified on the basis of configuration, motion control, physical characteristics, and power supply control.

In this article, we are dividing the industrial robots on the basis of configuration and will read about how they are impacting various businesses. There are six basic types of industrial robots that are revolutionizing the industry.

1. Cartesian Robots

These robots have a rectangular configuration and hence are also known as a gantry or rectilinear robots. These robots can be used for linear motion with their three perpendicular axes having slide motion. They come with triple prismatic joints, which help in delivering linear motion by sliding.

They can also be elongated with an extra wrist attached to the body. This allows the robot to carry rotational movement. Since these robots can offer flexibility with their structure, they are used in various industrial applications.

2. Articulated Robots

One of the most used robots in the industries today are articulated robots. They have the ability to boost your business marketing and growth. The way it is mechanically configured is very similar to the arm of a human being. Further, a twisted joint is present at the base of the arm, which helps in the movement of the arm. These rotary joints can range up to two to ten. More the number of joints, the greater the degree of freedom. These joints are arranged in a manner that they are parallel or orthogonal to each other. 3. SCARA Robots

SCARA or Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm are also very common when it comes to industries. They have a donut-shaped work envelope. SCARA robots consist of a couple of joints connected parallelly to provide compliance in a single selected plane.

They also have rotary shafts that are placed vertically. For the horizontal movement, is the end effector attached to the arm.

With the robotic process automation, SCARA can be used for various applications such as,

  • Assembly and Biomed applications
  • Packaging and palletizing
  • Machine loading and semiconductor wafers handling

They can be very effective as they can move really fast and are easy to integrate. They are best for repeatable actions and can benefit larger workspaces.

They are limited to,

  • Dedicated controller for the robot
  • Planar surface
  • Online programming only as they are hard to program offline

4. Delta Robots

Delta robots or parallel link robots is the fourth one on our list. These are mechanically configured in a way that it contains two parallel joint linkages. These joints are further connected with a common base.

High-speed operations can be performed with delta robots due to direct control of both joints over the end effector, and the positioning of the effectors is controllable.

These robots have a work envelope of a dome shape. Following are some applications of delta robots that can boost your business productivity,

  • Usage in the food and electronic industry
  • The medical and pharmaceutical industry
  • Flight simulators and automobile
  • Optical fiber alignment

They are limited to complicated operations and require dedicated robot control.

These bots are really speedy and perform actions at a very fast rate. Along with that, their operational accuracy is tremendous.

5. Polar Robots

However, polar robots have their own limitations, such as,

  • Relatively short vertical reach,
  • Unable to reach above themselves
  • Requires a particular robotic controller
  • Low repeatability in the direction of rotary motion
  • Low efficiency

6. Cylindrical Robots

Rotary joints are connected to the base and prismatic joint with the links. They have a cylindrical workspace with an extended arm that can be moved vertically and through sliding. It is limited to,

  • Reaching around the obstacles
  • Low accuracy when it comes to rotary motion
